The two candidates for County Sheriff, Jim Gardiner and Pat Hedges, will speak at the 7: 00 p.m. meeting by the local Libertarian Party Central Committee on Wednesday, October 14. In announcing the event, Gary Kirkland, the party president, said he believes this will be the first venue in which the two have appeared together. The meeting will be in Linn's Restaurant, located at the corner of Marsh and Chorro streets. "We look forward to hearing what Pat Hedges and Jim Gardiner consider their key issues," said Kirkland. "We also are interested in hearing where they agree with Libertarian positions of personal freedoms and responsibilities."

J. Patrick Hedges, 46, is a Lieutenant in the Sheriff's Office, and has been with the county force for 20 years. James M. Gardiner, 49, is Chief of Police, City of SLO, and has 29 years of experience in law enforcement.

During this election year, the local Libertarian Party has hosted a number of candidates for county offices. Kirkland said that members like the idea of meeting candidates face to face; it helps in making an informed decision as to the better person for the job.

Fred Tarwater, David Bersohn and Ed Moss joined the group, dinner and lively conversation continued for the 2 hours.

Gary Kirkland suggested that we consider printing only a few Stock Certificates when we finalize our plans for forming a stock company for Reg 40. Also some determination has to be made on how to award activism with shares of SLO Cty stock.

Gary gave out copies of the ACLU position on Affirmative Action which is basicall to toss aside constitutional guarentees in order to redress prior wrongs. Gary would like to have the ACLU speak at our mtg again sometime soon.

Fred Tarwater gave a presentation on the effects of Excess Taxation and the history of such taxation and complex tax codes causing societal collapse. Questions and discussion followed.

Ed Moss suggested that the Political Science Dept (in the person of Alan Settle, SLO Mayor) be contacted regarding having all of the Libertarian Candidates for statewide office appear on campus at Cal Poly. Gary agreed to contact Professor (Mayor) Settle to see what can be arranged and when.
