Five of the seven candidates for Secretary of State here in California appeared together on Adelphia Cable TV in Santa Monica Tuesday, Oct 1, 2002. Gail Lightfoot, Libertarian joined the Democrat, Green, Reform and Republican in a one hour show hosted by Bill Rosendahl to discuss issues related to the Secretary of State's office.
Lightfoot differed sharply from the other candidates in not voicing full support for and going on to point out flaws of Prop 52. Both Lightfoot and the Republican candidate expressed concern regarding the removal of the Provisional voting for Same Day (Election Day, At the Polls) voter registration and voting.
"I object to requiring ID for one group (those who register on Election Day) and not another (those who register 30 days prior to the election)." Lightfoot said. "I also fail to see how "Same Day" voter registration will increase voter registration any more than any other effort to remind voters of the final day for voter registration. Education and a real choice will get voters to the polls on election day." Lightfoot continued.
"This could be pie in the sky thinking regardless of its other merits." Lightfoot added later.
After the forum, Lightfoot explained her position further by saying, "I support Election Day voter registration without ID and with Provisional Voting to ensure voters do not use the opportunity to vote more than once or bus voters in from outside to vote in any election."
"Simply stated, Prop 52 does the right thing but leaves out workable protections against election fraud." Lightfoot said.
